My installation, Hashtag, explores the Occupy movement through the use of clips from traditional and social media outlets. Starting as a small movement born out of social media, Occupy received little to no coverage from large media outlets, but instead communicated through social media (twitter, you tube, etc.). Even though nontraditional methods of communication were used, their message spread rapidly to a larger audience and gained global support. Hashtag uses clips from social and traditional media. It is displayed by utilizing a 9-channel audiovisual installation to highlight the method of communication that caused the movement’s growth and documented its events from October to December 2011.
